Job Description

Our client is looking for an ambitious and motivated individual to join their team as an ‘IT Assistant Modern Apprentice.’

This role exists within the ITS Ops function within the organisation. The department is responsible for the delivery and support of core IT functions. NOC sits within the ITIL Service Delivery arm of the department, working alongside other core delivery functions such as Service Desk and Desktop.

To work as part of the team responsible for the monitoring of our client’s key services and applications including Network, Unix and Database infrastructures, you must be able to work a mixture of night and day shifts covering a 24 x 7 period (for Apprentices this will likely be dayshift over 5 days in the first instance). Highlighting and escalating issues to designated ICT contacts as appropriate along with the running, analysing and troubleshooting of core overnight batches.

Over the course of the apprenticeship programme, you will become proficient in the following areas:

  • Network, Infrastructure and Monitoring
  • Communication and Escalation
  • Backup Management
  • Core Batch Runs

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor network and infrastructure for outages and intrusions.
  • Analyse and respond to any events detected, and report them in accordance with the event and incident escalation and notification procedures.
  • Perform restoration actions for outages and/or escalates them to the next level for further action per standard operating procedures, whilst taking ownership of the issue and tracking through to completion.
  • To complete information, investigation and troubleshooting on any incidents assigned to the Operations Bridge queue in a timely, accurate and professional manner.
  • Monitor queues of auto-generated alerts and incidents, taking action according to standard operating procedures, and ensure other sections take action on incidents assigned to them.
  • Monitor Operations Bridge e-mail inboxes for tasks and potential issues, and initiates action in response to requests.
  • Liaise with our client’s internal customers to identify any changes to business transaction volumes to enable the impact on our client’s computer systems to be estimated.
  • Comfortable and confident to escalate and communicate to managers and senior managers when appropriate.
  • Responsible for the management and audits of offsite data secured in cold and deep storage.
  • Responsible for performing overnight batch runs against our core payment/repayment, collections and data systems
  • Ensuring analysis and troubleshooting is carried out in line with standard procedures.
  • Escalating and communicating any issues with these batches.
  • Best practice use of the ITSM toolset.
  • Best practice in line with ITIL guidelines.
  • Adhering to all internal SLA’s, OLA’s, policies and procedures.
  • Undertaking other ad hoc tasks as directed by the Team Leader, when required.

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate must have at least NAT 5’s in Maths, English and relevant ICT subjects.
  • Working knowledge of standard desktop applications i.e. MS Office suite.
  • The ability to remain focused during quiet periods and ensure a constant approach to tasks.
  • Ability to complete all duties, including repetitive tasks, in an accurate and timely manner.
  • High standard of both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to adapt to an ever-changing digital landscape.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to learn new concepts and skills quickly and to work well without supervision.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of Unix.
  • Experience within a Network Operations environment
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills would be advantageous.

Our client is a non-profit making Government-owned organisation set up in 1989 to provide loans and grants to students in universities and colleges in the UK. We are responsible, in partnership with Local Authorities in England and Wales, the Student Awards Agency for Scotland, the Education and Library boards in Northern Ireland, the Higher Education Institutions and HM Revenue & Customs, for student support delivery in the UK.

Our client enables their customers to invest in their futures by delivering secure, accurate and efficient assessment, payment and repayment services.

Your training will start with a 6-12 months Data Analytics Technical Apprenticeship, which consists of learning on the job, as well as our custom-built E-Learning platform. You will develop all the skills you need to pass your work-based assessments. Our assessors are available to provide one-to-one support and will work with your line manager to ensure you settle into your new role.

You will gain a Diploma in Data Analytics, which is a Nationally recognised qualification and may be used to gain employment and further your career in Data Analytics.

***Please note all candidates must be 16-19 due to government apprenticeship funding and must be able to easily commute to Glasgow every weekday.
